When Silver Cross Hospital left Joliet for New Lenox in February 2012, it put a 348-bed hospital with a Level II trauma center, heart surgery and a neonatal intensive care unit on the edge of the village, at the I-355 and US-6 interchange. For New Lenox households, that turned the nearest emergency room and the nearest cancer center into a short drive.
The campus keeps growing around the main building. Cancer care runs in the Carolyn J. Czerkies Pavilion on the north side, where UChicago Medicine oncologists give chemotherapy, infusion and radiation. Inpatient rehabilitation is run with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Pavilion A. Outpatient surgery happens at the separate Silver Cross Surgery Center on Pawlak Parkway. Each of those buildings has its own front door, which matters when a rider is weak after treatment and the driver needs to pull up at the right one.
Being close does not make the trip simple. A patient who cannot drive after chemotherapy, or who is going home after a knee replacement, still needs someone to be there at the time the unit decides, not the time a relative can leave work. Stretcher discharges need two people who know how to transfer a patient safely. Those are the rides we run most from New Lenox.
Some care is still out of town: specialists at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, veterans' appointments at Hines, or a second opinion at an academic center in Chicago. Those trips are longer, and we plan them with a pickup window that fits the appointment and the traffic on I-80 and I-55.
