Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Manhattan, IL

Manhattan has a Metra station at the south end of the SouthWest Service, open since 2006. It is built for commuters: trains run toward Union Station in downtown Chicago in the morning and come back in the evening. For a Manhattan patient who needs to reach Silver Cross in New Lenox, a Joliet hospital or a dialysis chair, the train does not help. There is no local bus to take its place.

The drive itself is longer than in most suburbs. Silver Cross is roughly 10 miles north, over roads that cross open farmland. Joliet is reached by US-52. Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee is south. In good weather none of these is a hard drive. In January, with snow blowing across the fields, a patient who cannot drive and a relative who works in the city face a real problem.

The village has grown quickly, and new subdivisions sit next to older farmhouses. Primary care has followed: Silver Cross Medical Group runs a practice on West North Street. Hospital care, imaging beyond the basics, surgery and dialysis still mean leaving town, often several times a month for a patient in active treatment.
