Wheelchair transportation services provide ADA-compliant vehicles with hydraulic lifts or ramps, floor-mounted securements, and trained drivers to safely transport patients who use manual or power wheelchairs. Unlike a standard taxi or rideshare (which cannot accommodate wheelchairs), wheelchair transport vehicles are purpose-built so the passenger rides in their own wheelchair, secured to the vehicle floor with tie-down straps and lap belts. In Illinois, wheelchair transport costs $65 – $115 base plus $3 – $6 per mile, and Medicaid covers it at $0 to the patient.
Wheelchair NEMT comes in three service levels, each providing a different degree of driver assistance:
The driver pulls up to the curb at the pickup address and at the destination. The patient (or a family member/caregiver) must get the patient from the building to the curb, where the driver deploys the ramp or lift and secures the wheelchair in the vehicle. At the destination, the driver brings the patient to the curb and the facility staff takes over.
The driver goes to the patient's door (front door of a house, apartment door, hospital room door) and assists the patient from the door to the vehicle. At the destination, the driver brings the patient from the vehicle to the facility entrance. This is the most common service level for wheelchair transport.
The driver accompanies the patient all the way inside the facility — through the entrance, down hallways, into elevators, and to the check-in desk or treatment area. At pickup, the driver goes inside the facility to retrieve the patient. This level is essential for patients who cannot navigate a large hospital or medical complex independently.
A proper wheelchair transport vehicle has specific features that distinguish it from any modified minivan:
Dream Care Rides maintains a fleet of ADA-compliant wheelchair vans inspected before every trip. Every vehicle has functioning lifts, current tie-down straps, and calibrated securement systems. Call (708) 505-6994 to schedule a wheelchair transport.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets legal standards that wheelchair transportation providers must meet:
Wheelchair transport is appropriate for any patient who cannot safely transfer from their wheelchair to a standard vehicle seat. Common situations:
Not all wheelchairs are the same size or weight, and not all transport vehicles accommodate every chair:
| Wheelchair Type | Typical Weight | Vehicle Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Manual wheelchair (folding) | 15 – 35 lbs | Any wheelchair van |
| Manual wheelchair (rigid frame) | 15 – 25 lbs | Any wheelchair van |
| Standard power wheelchair | 50 – 150 lbs | Van with lift (ramp may not support weight with patient) |
| Heavy-duty power wheelchair | 150 – 250 lbs | Van with high-capacity lift (800+ lb rating) |
| Bariatric wheelchair | 75 – 200 lbs | Wide-door van with bariatric lift |
| Motorized scooter | 80 – 200 lbs | Van with lift and adequate interior clearance |
When booking, tell us the wheelchair type and approximate weight so we dispatch the right vehicle. Call (708) 505-6994 with your wheelchair details and we match you to the correct van.
Illinois Medicaid covers wheelchair NEMT at $0 to the patient. A Physician Certification Statement (PCS) confirming the need for wheelchair transport is required. The MCO's transportation broker authorizes the trip. Dream Care Rides handles PCS coordination. See our Medicaid rides page for the full process.
Original Medicare does not cover non-emergency wheelchair transport. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may include wheelchair NEMT as a supplemental benefit. Check your plan documents or call your plan's member services.
Most private insurance plans do not cover NEMT. Some employer plans and workers' compensation plans include medical transportation benefits. Check with your insurer.
Any patient can book wheelchair transport by paying out of pocket. No authorization, no paperwork. Call (708) 505-6994, tell us where you need to go, and we confirm the price immediately. For more on private pay options, see our private pay page.
Patients with recurring medical appointments — dialysis, chemotherapy, physical therapy, wound care — benefit from standing order scheduling. Instead of booking each trip individually, you set up a recurring schedule:
