Short answer: For eligible riders, Illinois Medicaid NEMT is the cheapest option — covered trips cost the rider nothing. For everyone else, a recurring private-pay plan with an NEMT provider beats single-trip pricing.
If you are enrolled in an Illinois Medicaid MCO, your covered wheelchair rides to medical appointments are paid by Medicaid. Your cost is $0 for in-network NEMT providers. Eligibility and the booking process are explained in our Medicaid NEMT coverage guide.
If you do not qualify for Medicaid and you need regular wheelchair rides (dialysis, therapy, recurring appointments), the cheapest private-pay path is a recurring ride plan. Per-trip pricing drops as frequency increases, because the provider can optimize routing. See the NEMT cost guide for how this works.
Uber WAV and Lyft Access can look cheaper per mile, but availability in Chicago is uneven, drivers are not trained attendants, and there is no door-through-door help. For routine medical appointments where reliability matters, dedicated NEMT is the safer and more predictable choice.

Uber WAV / Lyft Access vehicles are sometimes cheaper per-mile, but they do not offer trained attendants, door-through-door help, or guaranteed scheduling — and availability is limited in many parts of Chicago.
Per-trip pricing drops as your schedule frequency increases (2x, 3x, or 5x weekly). See our NEMT cost guide for how recurring-plan savings work.
For eligible Illinois Medicaid members, NEMT trips to covered medical appointments are paid by Medicaid with no cost to the rider — including wheelchair transport.
