Palos Hills looks compact on a map, and the hospital is close. Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital is a few minutes south, and Advocate Christ in Oak Lawn is a short drive east. On paper, getting to care should be easy. In practice, the obstacle for many riders is the building they live in.

Alongside its single-family streets, Palos Hills has many low-rise apartment and condominium buildings, clustered along Roberts Road, 103rd Street and 111th Street. Some are newer with elevators; many older ones are two or three stories of stairs. A stretcher crew of two can bring a bedbound rider down safely. Once you are in the vehicle, the rest of the trip is the easy part.
