Loyola University Medical Center is a quaternary care hospital: the place other hospitals send their hardest cases. It has more than 500 licensed beds, a Level I trauma center, a nationally recognized burn center, a transplant center and the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, all on its Maywood campus. The Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital sits next door on a 147-acre campus with specialized spinal cord injury and blind rehabilitation centers.

For Maywood residents, that concentration of care is a real asset, but it does not solve the ride. Not every household here has a spare car or a driver free during the workday. Fixed-route buses do not help someone who cannot walk to a stop, and a hospital a mile away is effectively out of reach for a wheelchair user without a ramp van.

The area also lost a hospital. Westlake Hospital in neighboring Melrose Park closed in 2019, which shifted more emergency and inpatient care toward Loyola, Gottlieb and MacNeal. For some Proviso Township families, the closest hospital is now farther than it used to be.
