Hammond is the largest city in Northwest Indiana's Lake County and sits directly across the state line from Chicago's Far South Side. For non-emergency medical transportation, that state line creates specific complications that most patients and families do not anticipate until they need a ride and discover that their coverage does not work the way they expected.
Insurance-arranged rides rarely cross the state line easily: a Hammond resident whose plan arranges rides may find that a trip to a Chicago hospital needs extra approval, or isn't covered at all, and approvals can take days.
Dream Care Rides does not accept Indiana Medicaid, so Hammond rides are private pay. For private-pay patients, the state line is irrelevant — we pick you up in Hammond and take you wherever your doctor is, whether that is Franciscan Health Hammond, a Chicago hospital, or a specialist in another Indiana city. The price is based on distance and vehicle type, with a straightforward upfront quote before you book.
When a plan's approval timeline would make a patient miss a time-sensitive appointment, a private-pay ride booked directly with us is often the simpler route. Many Hammond residents work in Illinois and receive at least some of their healthcare from Illinois-based providers. The Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard commercial corridors through Hammond connect directly to the Illinois border crossings, and thousands of Hammond residents commute to Chicago daily.
Franciscan Health Hammond on Hohman Avenue is the city's primary hospital and handles the majority of emergency and inpatient care for central Hammond. Community Healthcare System's St. Catherine Hospital on Main Street serves the eastern part of the city. For specialist care not available locally, Hammond patients frequently travel to Northwestern, Rush, UChicago Medicine, and the university hospital system in Indianapolis — a two-and-a-half-hour drive east. DCR provides transport to all of these destinations, managing the logistics that make cross-state medical care possible.
