St. Catherine Hospital belongs to Powers Health, the Northwest Indiana system known until July 2024 as Community Healthcare System. The name on the building did not change with the rebrand, which matters when a relative is reading an old appointment letter.

The hospital covers a lot of ground for a city this size: emergency services, cardiac and cardiovascular care, cancer care including radiation therapy, stroke care, diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology, rehabilitation, and inpatient and outpatient behavioral health. Regency Hospital of Northwest Indiana, a long-term acute care hospital, operates on the building's fourth floor, so some patients move between the two without ever leaving Fir Street.

Getting in and out is simple once you know the layout. Visitor parking runs along Grand Boulevard and 144th Street on the south side, along 142nd Street near the Family Birthing Center on the north, and by Washington Park on the east. Visitors enter between 8 AM and 8 PM; after that, entry is through Emergency Department security. We time evening pickups with that in mind.

When care moves up a level, a stroke or cardiac case may go south to Community Hospital in Munster, and rehab often follows at the Powers Health Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point. We carry East Chicago patients along each of those steps, from the first transfer out of St. Catherine to the last ride home from rehab.
