University Park is the last stop on the Metra Electric line and home to Governors State University, so the village has a train to downtown Chicago. The Train Goes North; the Hospitals Aren't on It
University Park has something most far-south villages do not: a Metra station. It is the southern terminus of the Metra Electric line, on Governors Highway near Stuenkel Road, and a short shuttle ride from Governors State University. For a healthy commuter going downtown, it is a real asset.
For medical trips, the picture is different. The hospitals and clinics University Park residents use most are in the suburbs around them. Franciscan Health Olympia Fields sits on Crawford Avenue, well off the tracks. Advocate South Suburban is in Hazel Crest. The Ingalls outpatient centre is on Governors Highway in Flossmoor. Reaching them by rail means a train, a transfer and a walk, which is not realistic for someone using a walker, recovering from surgery or managing dialysis fatigue.
That is the gap we fill. We pick up at the house, apartment or townhome, drive the fifteen minutes or so to the hospital, and bring you to the entrance that suits your mobility. For stretcher riders, the two-person crew goes straight to the bedside at home and to the unit at the hospital.
The train does still have a role. If you are going to the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park and can manage stairs and platforms, Metra can work. If you cannot, we drive that longer trip door to door, and we can wait during a long specialist visit.
